Gratitude 101, how to practice this art

At my gym, there's a spin instructor who often talks about journaling on her Instagram and how important it is to practice gratitude. If I'm perfectly honest, at the beginning, it gave me the same feeling as decor that says “live, laugh, love”.

I'm not judging you if that's your vibe, it simply isn’t mine. To each their own and it’s absolutely fine! That spin instructor is really positive. There are a lot of changes in my life right now and I thought it wouldn't hurt to try to focus on positive things.

I started by writing down 3 things I’m grateful for. Some people do it before sleeping, I prefer to do it in the morning to start the day off right. I really don't hate it and fun coincidence, my job offers a "Gratitude challenge" for 10 days and I thought it was the perfect opportunity to present my favorite activities to you!

1- ALPHABET

Super simple, it's about writing one word/event/whatever, per letter, that brings you joy. For example, my favorite thing in Halifax is the ocean so my word for the letter O is Ocean. What I also found really fun is to not overthink it. Choose the first words that come to mind, keep it light and easy!

2- REFLEXION ON A TALENT

It's good to be humble, but it's also important to recognize your own talents! It doesn't have to be anything phenomenal. Do you cook the best pancakes? Can you plank for a whole 2 minutes? If it makes you proud, talk about it in your notebook. If you're having trouble finding a topic, think of compliments you've received!

3- YOUR WORK

As I mentioned above, there is a lot going on in my life! I gave my notice (yay!) and since I am preparing everything for the person who is taking over, there is no shortage of stress. Unfortunately, it becomes harder to find the positive elements in my work. One of the exercises is to write about something positive about your job. Honestly, there are days when the only positive thing is that my chair at the office is more comfortable than the one at home. It's very small, but it helps to recognize the small things!

4- COMPLIMENT A STRANGER

This one really is one of my favorites!! The title says it all. Compliment a stranger. I really like your nails! If you think so, say so! You'll brighten their day and it'll make you happier, guaranteed.

5- CHANGE YOUR MINDSET

I really wouldn't have thought of this exercise myself. Still in your new notebook now dedicated to your gratitude exercises, make a vertical line in the middle of a page. On the left, write down everything that's bugging you right now. For example, 1- My roots are out of control. 2- I have to wash my car. On the right side, try to see what displeases you right now in a new light. For example, 1- My hair is healthy, I'm lucky and I have an appointment with my hairdresser soon! 2- I am privileged to have a car and to be able to travel easily, washing it is not a big deal! I chose tiny little first world problems, but that gives you an idea! Try it! And if you don't like it, at least you had an excuse to buy a new notebook!
